Left-Hander’s Day


Are you a lefty? Only 7-10% of people are left-handed by nature . People often get teased for being left-handed, but August 13th is a day to celebrate being a southpaw! Left handed living presents a few challenges . Right- handed scissors is the most obvious challenge. Handwriting is another one. Left-handers often smudge their ink as they write.

Left-handers also have to buy special sporting equipment, such as golf clubs or baseball mitts. Some right handed people play sports left handed. People who do not favor one hand over the other are ambidextrous . Left-handed people have to get used to working certain tools with their less dominant hand. Pianos, computers, and cameras all seem built for right handed people. Did you know that many geniuses are left handed? Five of the last seven American Presidents have been left-handed, including Barack Obama. Other famous lefties include the sculptor, Michelangelo, and Jim Henson, the famous puppeteer behind Kermit the Frog.

August 13th is a day when left-handed people put aside their challenges, and congratulate each other for having sharp athletic skills and creative minds. If you’re left-handed, why not throw a party on Left Hander’s Day? Just be sure to drink from your own glass at the dinner table!
