curare, tubocurarine type
Tubocurarine Tubocurarine (also known as d-tubocurarine or DTC) is a toxic alkaloid historically known for its use as an arrow poison. In the mid-1900s, it was used in conjunction with an anesthetic to provide skeletal muscle relaxation during surgery or mechanical ventilation. It is now rarely used as an adjunct for clinical anesthesia because safer alternatives, such as cisatracurium and rocuronium, are available.
For example, curare, which was an ancient South American arrow poison, was used in the 20th century as the muscle relaxant tubocurarine. |
Other drugs in use are succinylcholine chloride and tubocurarine chloride. |
Tubocurarine and its synthetic derivatives are used to relax muscles during surgical interventions. |
Extracts from plants containing toxic alkaloids, such as aconitine and tubocurarine, were used since antiquity for poisoning arrows. |
